Your body is detoxifying itself right now while you read this. Your gut, liver, skin and lymph glands are all constantly working to flush out toxins. It’s crucial we give our organs the support they need to carry out the detoxification process.
Poor health choices and the environment we live in can damage these systems - we have to take care of them so they function properly.
In today’s society we’re constantly faced with things that can adversely affect our health - air pollution, beauty and personal care products, daily use of “tech”, non-organic meat, alcohol, “diet” drinks, plastics, cleaning products – it’s a long list.
Having a number of go-to health-boosting strategies and biohacks is a good way to combat the effects of an unhealthy environment.
We’ve handpicked some of our favourite detoxing biohacks that we use on a daily basis. There isn’t one miracle cure to suddenly detox your body, but you can start adding these convenient hacks to support your body and improve your health. We’ve chosen tips that can easily be added to a busy routine to improve your life.
Follow these biohacks to optimise your body’s own detoxification process:
1. Rebounding – spend 5 minutes doing this in the mornings or at the end of your exercise sessions to stimulate your lymphatic system. Simply squat down and jump up repeatedly to help detoxifying lymph fluid travel around your body.
2. Add a plant – put a “detoxifying” plant in your bedroom or living room to help clean the air. Aloe vera or spider plants are our favourites. There are plenty of options in the “No Chemicals” chapter within our Detox Guide.
3. Cold shower – do this after you exercise sessions or at any time of the day to boost circulation, power up your immune system and stimulate your lymph glands.
4. Cup of green tea – it only takes a couple of minutes to brew up a cup of green tea. Take a break around 11am and enjoy a cup to help detox your body.
5. Tongue scraping – add this to your weekend routine. Do it after brushing your teeth to help prevent toxins building up in your body.
6. Health shots – if you’re in a rush, quickly mix up a “health shot” and drink it before you head out the door. Here’s one of our favourites - apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, turmeric and coconut water. Check out our Detox Guide for plenty of fun options!
7. Fasting – it’s simple, pick one day a week where your last meal is at around 6pm and your next one isn’t until lunchtime the following day. The extended period without food can help your body repair itself.
8. Acai powder – we love the antioxidant powers of this South American super berry. Add some Acai powder to your juice or smoothie in the morning.
9. Sauna – spend 10-15 minutes in the sauna every other day if you can. Schedule one session a week as a minimum.
10. Dry brushing – do this at least once a week. It’s simple, keep a dry brush in your bathroom and brush your body down before you shower. The brushing action will stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage blood circulation.
